Marriage Certificate of J.T. Howard and Mary Patton Hoover
Marriage Certificate of J.T. Howard and Mary Patton Hoover
Greg Hinshaw, descendant of Ephraim Knott, has evidence of Mary "Polly" Patton marrying a J.T. Howard in Fayette County, Indiana on 9 May 1843. The marriage certificate of Mary Hoover and Ephriam Knott has not been found, but Greg Hinshaw has a copy of it bearing the name Mary Howard and Ephraim Knott. This, and further research, quite convincingly demonstrate that this marriage is in fact correct.

This leaves the issue of the father of George W. Hoover in question, as he was born in 1846--about three years after the marriage of JT Howard to Mary. The only reasonable conclusion is that George W. Hoover was actually the son of JT Howard and Mary Patton Hoover Howard. The name of Hoover as George's surname appears to be done as a matter of convenience, or for some other reason.

Perhaps some day a DNA analysis of the descendants of George W. Hoover will be made. Those descendants that I have sofar found do not appear to have a significant interest in genealogy--so the matter will be left for a future time.

Marriage of William Snowden and Eliza Emmerson Scamblesby Parish, Lincolnshire, England
Married in the Scamblesby Parish Church on the fourth day of October in the year 1825.
It is interesting that both William and Eliza signed their names and did not use the customary "X" mark. William was an agricultural worker throughout his life, and demonstrated an unusual level of literacy for the day. Eliza's handwriting is quite elegant as well.

The marriage of William Sowden (Snowden), Bachelor and Eliza Emmerson, Spinster was approved by Banns and performed on the 4th day of October, 1825. Note the handwriting of both William and Eliza near the bottom of the form--which was remarkable given the fact that they were barely 20 years old and lived in rural farming communities. That William spelled his name as Sowden is not unusual, as spelling was phonetic in that era and the name was spelled in several ways.

Note that both William and Ann signed their name with their mark ("X") and that Ann's father, Thomas Larder, had very good penmanship.

Andrew Gibbons, along with other Mormons, were charged and tried for plural marriages. Andrew was found 'not guilty' and charges were dismissed. Andrew did take on a second wife, Phoebe Mariah Dart, but things did not work out and they were divorced. No date of divorce has been found, but their marriage took place in October of 1859. Reportedly, the marriage did not survive a year or two.
