Notes |
- Leo's wife Marie, daughter Helen, and Helen's husband were killed in an auto accident in 1957. See newspaper article "Cousin of Leo Fries Dies in Marion:" Leo was well known in the area, and is described as a resident of Thorncreek Township near Columbia City. Leo was a teacher in his earlier years, teaching agronomy at Oregon Polytechnical Institute. He later farmed in Thorncreek Townshiip, Indiana and was active civically--authoring numerous articles on the history of the region for the Whitley County Historical Society.
Leo, Marie and the entire family operated the Root Beer Barrel, a local drive in restaurant, in Columbia City. Other work done by Leo was farming, and he and Ed operated the family homestead and farm for many years. They also sold dressed poultry, to include turkeys, chickens and ducks.
Leo loved to write, and many articles and documents can be found in the county that were authored by Leo.

 | Letter from Ralph Gates to Leo
Whitley County Civil War Monument Letter provided by Mary Lou Fries
"I was cleaning a closet and found a letter written by Ralph Gates to Leo. They both graduated from Columbia City High School in 1911. They were college roommates. Ralph was Indiana's Governor from 1945 through 1949. I thought you would be interested in the handwritten note about the Civil War Monument.
The copy of the envelope is Pappy's (Leo) writing. He had mailed his high school graduation program to his sister Rosa. Rosa married E. P. Regan. |
