For the Fries(e) family, documents list both France and Germany as the country of origin (birth). At the time of emigration, Alsace was a part of France. In 1870-1871 the Franco Prussian War was fought, and at the conclusion Alsace became a part of Germany. This appears to explain why documents from that time on list Germany as the country of emigration. |

Source: Letter from Mary Lou Fries dated 6Dec2006. “...In a paper that leo had dictated when he was 89, reads: The Fries’ came from Alsace, Lorane (sic) along with 3 other families. They embarked in Nov. 1852 and were 5 weeks on the ocean. After a stormy crossing they landed in Maryland on Dec. 23rd. Their money was all gone except a $1.00 and an axe (sic), so they stopped temporarily with some friends near Pittsburgh. They did any jobs they could find and after they had a little money the men went to Fort Wayne and later walked out to Walnut Corners here in Columbia City. After they had a little money, the women came here to live also.”
Emigration from France: Erasmus and family left Havre DeGrace, France and arrived in New York City, New York on 12 December 1853 aboard the ship Rockall. The family include wife Rosa, son Erasmus, daughter Cath, son Joseph, son Xavier, and daughter Rosa. Noted is the fact that Rosa is believed to be a twin; and sister Susan is not with the family. Information has been taken from the ship’s passenger list.
Family tradition indicates Rosa was a twin, with a sister Susana being born. She must have died prior to their departure from France.
Erasmus indicataed their nationality as French on the passenger list. |

 | Passenger list--Ths Ship "Rockall"
Departed Havre de Grace, France The Fries family traveled aboard the ship Rockall, landing in New York on the 12th of December, 1953. Family legend has it that they traveled with two other relatives. From birth records we know that children Rose and Suzanne were twins, but Rose is only listed on the ship's manifest. Her age is listed as 2/4 years--or mathematically about six months. Note that the family listed beneath them on the manifest has a daughter aged 2/4, whose name is Suzanne. Additionally, they are from the same area as the Fries, and are bound for the same place in the United States. Follow-up research has not provided a tie; and there appears to be no association. But a connection has not been ruled out. |

Think back in time and imagine that Rosa and Thomas were leaving the church after their wedding ceremony in 1869--that the family no doubt worked on for may of the preceding weeks. These old steps conjure up wonderful thoughts of youth, happiness and eternal love. |
