- Ian Ross MacMillan indicates in his letter dated 25 May 1979 that John was a “Barnado Boy” that was born in Motherwell. They moved from Motherwell to Canada. Ian further states that John ran away from home at the tender age of 12 years, in the year 1924. His calculated birthdate is Abt 1912.
In a subsequent letter, Ian MacMillan describes a “Barnado Boy. “Barnado was a Victorian doctor who set up a home in the East End of London orphans and they were cared for in the ways of the time and with a view to betterment. So a Barnado Boy is one of life’s unfortunates that was fortunate if you see what I mean.”
