    Gender Male
Burial For the Fries(e) family, documents list both France and Germany as the country of origin (birth). At the time of emigration, Alsace was a part of France. In 1870-1871 the Franco Prussian War was fought, and at the conclusion Alsace became a part of Germany. This appears to explain why documents from that time on list Germany as the country of emigration.

Source: High school project of Catherine Fries (John and Mary Lou’s daughter): Erasmus was from Lorraine, France, Bolivaria, German, Switzerland. (Spellings and country are as received.) This could reference the ownership of that area of birth resulting from political divisions through his life time.
Emigration 12 Dec 1853  New York Find all individuals with events at this location
    • Arrival date aboard the Rockall, originating in Havre De Grace, France.
Immigration Source: Letter from Mary Lou Fries dated 6 Dec 2006. “...In a paper that leo had dictaged when he was 89, reads: The Fries’ came from Alsace, Lorane along with 3 other families. They embarked in Nov. 1852 and were 5 weeks on the ocean. After a stormy crossing they landed in Maryland on Dec. 23rd. Their money was all gone except a $1.00 and an axe (sic), so they stopped temporarily with some friends near Pittsburgh. They did any jobs they could find and after they had a little money the men went to Fort Wayne and later walked out to Walnut Corners here in Columbia City. After they had a little money, the women came here to live also.”

Leo Joseph Fries isued a hand-written letter at some time prior to his death (undated) outlining the genealogy of the Fries family. Following is an excerpt from it:
"Their funds being exhausted hey stopped with friends in Pennsylvania. The father, and (illegible) sons came to Ft. Wayne, then the end of the railroad, and walked out to Walnut Corners, Whitley County, and took a lease on a corner of the 1800 acre Nolv (??) Farm for 3 years. Family came later."

Emigration from France: Erasmus and family left Havre DeGrace, France and arrived in New York City, New York on 12 December 1853 aboard the sailing ship Rockall. The family include wife Rosa, son Erasmus, daughter Cath, son Joseph, son Xavier, and daughter Rosa. Noted is the fact that Rosa is believed to be a twin; and sister Susan is not with the family. Information has been taken from the ship’s passenger list.

Family tradition indicates Rosa was a twin, with a sister Susana being born. She must have died prior to their departure from France; although Leo Fries indicates she survived and married a man named Mr. Ball.

Erasmus indicated their nationality as French on the passenger list.
LAND Source: Letter from Mary Lou Fries dated 6 Dec 2006: “To answer your question on France or Germany, the papers seem to say France. However, it was the fight between France and Germany that brought Erasmus over here. John does not recall anyone saying what language they spoke. Pappy (Leo) always claimed he was German. Can’t help you right now.”

The Fries family all seem to agree that the family emigrated from a town in Alsace called Uffholtz. This is a small town, located at the following coordinates: Latitude 48.81666667 (47 degees 49 minutes Northing and Longitude 7.1666667 (7 degrees 10 minutes Easting. This small city is located at an elevation of about 980 feet above mean sea level, with an estimated population of 28,108 persons in 2009.

For research purposes, Uffholtz is found in the Alsace Region of France; Department--Haut-Rhin, Arrondissement--Thann; Canton--Cernay with the town occupying 4.61 square miles (11.91 square killometers) of area.

    Notes
    • Mary Lou Fries, wife of John Fries, indicated (September 2006) that Erasmus' middle name was Xavier, but after moving to the United States changed the spelling to Havier so it would be more easily understood. She also reported the surname was changed by dropping the final "e " for a spelling of Fries. The family continued for a while with the original spelling. Erasmus and Mary Rosa emigrated from Alsace Lorraine, France in about 1853, where they lived briefly in Pennsylvania. In 1854 they moved to Columbia City, Indiana. [Spelling of the Fries surname appears justified, based upon records located in the official archives of France.]

Greenhill Cemetery records, Whitley County, Indiana. Established birth date, death date, and place of burial for Erasmus.

Response to a question raised in the Brethren Forum:
We today often think of Alsatians as culturally German (although it is a part of modern France), but although they have always spoken a German language, and are what we might today deem culturally German seeming, they have always called themselves French. Lorraine, however, always spoke French. It's also a border region, and so has been in dispute as well, but these two regions were always geographically and linguistically separated.

Birth record states Erasme Fries is his legal name in France.

Passenger list--Ths Ship "Rockall" Departed Havre de Grace, France
The Fries family traveled aboard the ship Rockall, landing in New York on the 12th of December, 1953. Family legend has it that they traveled with two other relatives. From birth records we know that children Rose and Suzanne were twins, but Rose is only listed on the ship's manifest. Her age is listed as 2/4 years--or mathematically about six months. Note that the family listed beneath them on the manifest has a daughter aged 2/4, whose name is Suzanne. Additionally, they are from the same area as the Fries, and are bound for the same place in the United States. Follow-up research has not provided a tie; and there appears to be no association. But a connection has not been ruled out.
