Notes |
- The use of the term"British Subject" was to conceal the fact that Eliza Emerson was the daughter of an unmarried mother. The term "British Subject" was sufficiently confusing that nobody was thought able to make this determination.
===
Above may be correct. On 1841 Census she is shown as not being born in the County and on 1851 Census she is a British Subject and on 1861 Census being born in Portsmouth, Hampshire. Heather ROGERS nee JOHNSON my cousin and myself are convinced that that Eliza born on 5 July 1803 is the correct Eliza, but she has given vague information because she was illegitimate. Her mother Elizabeth is sister to Robert Emmerson. (Source: Shirley Berry)

Ancestry search--Eliza Emmerson, b 1805, +- 5 years, died 1867 in Lincolnshire
Result #1--Eliza Emmerson found in 1861 census, District 4, Horncastle, Horncastle, Lincs
Foundry Street Workhouse
b. about 1805, age 56, b. in Tathwell, Lincs (Horncastle District)
Tathwell is located 3 miles south of Louth. Also, about 3 miles from N. Reston, 4-5 miles from Scamblesby/Goulceby/Market Stainton. And 1.5 miles from Raithby.
Listed as inmate
Imbecile from birth
This disqualifies the Elizabeth Emmerson listed above, born on 3 November 1805, and an imbecile from birth, as being "Eliza Emmerson" Snowden, my 4th great grandmother.
Ancestry Search--same criteria
Result #2--Eliza Emerson (one "m"), age 46, b. about 1805 in Tathwell
Listed as "An Imbecile"
This further disqualifies her as her condition appears consistent over a ten year period. My grandmother appears in other census records for these periods.
Ancestry Search--England and Wales FreeBMD Death Index
Result #1--Eliza Snowden, b. about 1807, died at age 60, registration in Louth, first quarter of 1867. GRO Book 7a, page 411
Ancestry Search--Eliza Snowden, age 35, b. about 1806, married to William Snowden. 1841 Market Stainton, Lincs census.
Result #1--Correct person. approximate date of birth was 1806
Ancestry Search--Eliza Snowden, age 43, b. about 1808, married to William Snowden. 1851 North Ormsby, Lincs census. Born: British subject.
Result #1--Correct person. approximate date of birth was 1808
Ancestry Search--Eliza Snowden, age 52, b. about 1809, married to Willliam Snowden. 1861 N. Somercotes, Lincs. census. Born: Portsmouth, Hampshire, England
Result #1--Correct person. Approximate date of birth was 1809.
Result #2--Portsmouth, Hampshire was listed as place of birth. This is the first reference to an exact birth location found. If true, the Scamblesby parish record clearly is the wrong person.
Result #3--All verifiable references to Eliza's birth precede the 1805 birth date of the Scamblesby record. Therefore, that record must be a different person.
Parish Record--Scamblesby Parish, Marriage record
Marriage of William Sowden and Eliza Emmerson, spinster of the Parish, were married in this church by Banns with the consent of ______ (no one listed) this fourth day of October in the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty five. (Document continues)
Result #1--If Eliza was born in 1808, and married in 1825, her age at marriage would have been 17. This appears reasonable for the day.
Result #2--their first child Emmerson, born in August of 1826, would have arrived ten months after the marriage. This appears reasonable, even for a 17 year old to conceive.
CONCLUSION: Based upon the facts shown above, it is reasonable to conclude that Eliza's birth likely was in about 1808. The most probably birth location, based upon the census return of 1861, would be Portsmouth, Hampshire. However, that is a substantial distance from Lincolnshire and these people were poor agricultural workers. It is possible though, with no other intervening options at the present time. For purposes of accuracy, Eliza's birth date will be changed to abt 1808 and the location of her birth will be left open for now, with a general note about Portsmouth. The christening date will be removed also.

Hello Ron,
I know everything about the EMMERSON/EMERSON seen in the Record
at
Scamblesy given by the Batch Number C030771
The concetration to Eliza and
Elizabeth who appear on my Tree, have been accounted for.
Eliza of 1803 was
the "imbecile" who died at the Union Street Workhouse at Horncastle and
who
was buried at Goulceby.
Elizabeth born and christened 1805, these types of
events suggests that the child was likely
not to survive and only probably
lived for a few hours.
The Eliza who went to marry William was Eliza of
Alverstoke, literaly 2 miles distant from
Portsmouth, Hampshire (See my Map)
who is linked to Robert and Ann.
Portmouth is a "Naval Port" even in Henry VIII days
We, have firm evidence to this where Emmerson her son was resident
possibly in the same
house as Robert and Ann in 1851.
She was born in 1808/9
according to the reliabilty of her 1851 and 1861 Census, even her burial
suggests that she was born in 1807.
Whichever date, her birth can only be
estimated at 1808 and therefore christened aged 4, if using this method.
If you believe that she was even Elizabeth of 1805 she would have been 46 years of
age when she had Emmela.
Even if you were still to believe she was Eliza of
1803 she would have been 48 years of age and menapauseing.
It is the singular reason that Emmela was likely not to survive and sadly it was so, even when she
was about aged 44.
I had in my last email provided a possible Elizabeth who
could have been Eliza, found in the Tathwell Record, where I know
Elizabeth EMMERSON of South Somercotes was resident in 1841.
It was even assumed that
her daughter natural daughter Eliza, was from Tathwell in her 1851 and 1861
Census Returns until it was corrected in her later Census Returns.
Eliza EMERSON of Alverstoke/Portsmouth now must stop at the Adoption by Robert and Ann,
despite "The English Emersons"
which, was written closest to dates of the
events. It shows "issue", the term is loosely based and I advise that it may not
always mean natural but "child of".
The register at Alverstoke shows "Eliza"
Regards
Leslie

Above may be correct. On 1841 Census she is shown as not being born in the County; and on 1851 Census she

JOHNSON, my cousin and myself are convinced that that Eliza born on 5 July 1803 is the correct Eliza, but
she has given vague information because she was illegitimate. Her mother Elizabeth is sister to Robert
Emmerson and according to stories in the family he looked after his sister and her illegitimate children. Robert
was press ganged into the Navy in 1795. His wife Ann was born in Elsham, Kent. Robert spent all his life in
the Navy and ended up a Warrant Officer (see his part of the Tree). Emerson SNOWDEN was present at
Ann's death and Robert and Ann were living next door to Emerson in 1851 Census and Ann was living with
Emerson in 1861 described as a Widow. [6]

 | Marriage of William Snowden and Eliza Emmerson
Scamblesby Parish, Lincolnshire, England
Married in the Scamblesby Parish Church on the fourth day of October in the year 1825.
It is interesting that both William and Eliza signed their names and did not use the customary "X" mark. William was an agricultural worker throughout his life, and demonstrated an unusual level of literacy for the day. Eliza's handwriting is quite elegant as well. |

Manby Parish Records (Lincolnshire, England) The marriage of William Sowden (Snowden), Bachelor and Eliza Emmerson, Spinster was approved by Banns and performed on the 4th day of October, 1825. Note the handwriting of both William and Eliza near the bottom of the form--which was remarkable given the fact that they were barely 20 years old and lived in rural farming communities. That William spelled his name as Sowden is not unusual, as spelling was phonetic in that era and the name was spelled in several ways. |

Williams age, listed as 62, places his birth year at approximately 1803/4. This corresponds to his Christening on November of 1803 in North Reston Parish. |
