A Butcher's Steelyards:- Violet SNOWDEN of Covenham was charged with being in possession of an unjust
steelyard, used for trade purposes, on 21 December 1897. Defendant said he had the steelyards. Insp.
Kennie said he visited the defendant's slaughterhouse on the date in question and found a large pair of
steelyards unstamped hanging upon a nail on the wall. He seized them, and on adjusting them at the office
found that they were 5 pounds short weight. They were rejected on the 19 of August 1891, as unfit for use.
The defendant was also warned about them at the same time. Defendant said he never used the steelyards.
The Chairman:- Have you any proof that he used them ? Inspector Kennie:- Only by the appearance of them.
He has no other weighing machine. Defendant:- I never sell meat at home. My meat is sold at Grimsby.
Insp. Kennie produced the steelyards for inspection by the Magistrates. The Chairman:- Those have not been
put away for a long time. The Magistrates retired and on their return the Chairman said:- Have you, Mr.
Kennie, any proof that he sells meat from Covenham ? Insp. Kennie:- No Sir. The Chairman:- Then,
Snowden, we shall give you the benefit of the doubt and dismiss the case subject to paying costs of 2s 6d and
forfeiting the steelyards.

 | Marriage of William Snowden and Eliza Emmerson
Scamblesby Parish, Lincolnshire, England
Married in the Scamblesby Parish Church on the fourth day of October in the year 1825.
It is interesting that both William and Eliza signed their names and did not use the customary "X" mark. William was an agricultural worker throughout his life, and demonstrated an unusual level of literacy for the day. Eliza's handwriting is quite elegant as well. |

 | Marriage Registration
Manby Parish Records (Lincolnshire, England) The marriage of William Sowden (Snowden), Bachelor and Eliza Emmerson, Spinster was approved by Banns and performed on the 4th day of October, 1825. Note the handwriting of both William and Eliza near the bottom of the form--which was remarkable given the fact that they were barely 20 years old and lived in rural farming communities. That William spelled his name as Sowden is not unusual, as spelling was phonetic in that era and the name was spelled in several ways. |
