Burial Researcher notes indicate the mother of Emmerson Snowden is Ann Emmerson, not Eliza Note: on 1851 census, Robert Emmerson and Ann Emmerson live next door to Emmerson Snowden . These likely are the parents of Ann.

Certified marriage certificate indicates Emerson Snowden married Ann Hufton on 23 Feb 1846 in the District of Louth, County of Lincoln. William Snowden is the father of Emerson; and Richard Hufton is the father of Ann. Emerson was 20 years of age (approximately) and Ann would have been of similar or younger age. Both Emerson and Ann are listed as residents of North Somercoates, Lincolnshire at the time of marriage. William's occupation is "laborer" and Richard's is "carrier." Marriage was solemnized at the Registrar's office.

Source: Quinton MacMillen indicated in a letter that it was a custom of the time period for the husband to take on the surname of the father of the bride--as his given name. Hence, Emerson Snowden may have adopted the name Emmerson as his given name--based upon this tradition.

Eliza Michael, who appears as a housekeeper for Emerson in the 1871 census, has a daughter named Annie who in the 1901 census is reported as Emerson’s daughter. This deserves further follow-up because of the possibility that Eliza married Emerson after the death of wife Ann Hufton in 1867-1871.

      Patricia Singleton writes: "
The evidence I have about Emersons misdimeanour is as follows :-
In the 1871 census Emerson Snowden (1826-1909) fathered a child (Annie E Micheal b.1868) with Eliza Michael (b.1833) who was his housekeeper. In the 1901 census Eliza is living alone, and Emerson is living with his acknowledged daughter Annie. In the 1881 census Eliza has 3 daughters,Ann Eliza Michael (b.1870), Ellen Elizabeth Michael (b.1875),and Emily Ester Michael (b.1880). I will have to check the dates for the 2 Ann(ie) E Michael's, they may be the same person."

Emerson Snowden is listed as a Boot and Shoe Maker in North Somercotes in the following publication: Kelly's Directory of THE LEATHER TRADES of England, Scotland and Wales. Fourth Edition. Printed and published by Kelly and Company, in 1871. Price of book was fifteen shillings to subscribers, and twenty shillings for non-subscribers.

From Tony Ainsworth, researching this line from England:
"The spelling of Emmerson of Eliza is with two extra M's. Emmerson therefore took the first name from his mothers surname and their firstborn girl (Eliza Snowden, born abt 1928) carries the first name of her mother Eliza. These were both common practises at the time, as it was to include the mothers maiden surname as a second name for that of her children. There are plenty of examples of this later in the Snowden Tree. My own brother is called Peter Harvey Ainsworth including my mothers maiden surname of Harvey.

It is interesting that both William and Eliza signed their names and did not use the customary "X" mark. William was an agricultural worker throughout his life, and demonstrated an unusual level of literacy for the day. Eliza's handwriting is quite elegant as well.

The marriage of William Sowden (Snowden), Bachelor and Eliza Emmerson, Spinster was approved by Banns and performed on the 4th day of October, 1825. Note the handwriting of both William and Eliza near the bottom of the form--which was remarkable given the fact that they were barely 20 years old and lived in rural farming communities. That William spelled his name as Sowden is not unusual, as spelling was phonetic in that era and the name was spelled in several ways.
