"In 1767, David Spence and his family boarded the ship "Earl of Denegal Duncan Ferguson master" and landed in South Carolina. Martha was only eight years old at this time. South Carolina, in order to attract Protestants to settle there, were awarding 100 acres of land to every man, woman and child."
"Arthur was not on the list of immigrants, but yet the book "South Carolina Baptists" indicates that he received 100 acres of land along with the rest of the children. Pearl says, "Maybe he was hiding when they took the roll call." This land was located in Laurens County, South Carolina In 1774, just seven years after landing in South Carolina, Martha married William Norris. She was 15 and he was 19 or 20 at the time. They went on to have eleven children."
