1870 Cass County Census has William living with Uncle Isaac Hoover and Aunt Jane Guinnup Hoover. William as shown as 17 years old, born in Indiana. Other records indicate he is 19, born in Ohio.
Date is 31 August 1870. |
Burial |
In 1867 Alice and William Riley were declared minor heirs of Henry Riley. A guardianship was established, which is indicative of Catharine Riley being deceased or otherwise incapacitated. Records were obtained from the Whitley County Historical Society concerning these proceedings in Whitley County; and consisted of 23 pages.
Contained therein are records dealing with Jeremian Eisaman, who was appointed guardian of both Alice and William on 6 September 1867. He later resigned.
The Troy Township, Whitley County, Indiana Census for 1870 has an entry for Jeramiah Easaman, age 24, a gun smith born in Pennsylvania, to include his wife Mearsey A., age 22, born in Ohio, and sons Albert (2 years) and Edwin (8/12). Additionally, Alice REILEY is listed as a 7 year old residing with them. A William Stiltz, age 76 and Mary, Stiltz, age 58, are also listed. The following entry is for Phillip Easaman, age 52 and Lovina, his wife, age 48 along with five children. (A logical conclusion is that Mary’s maiden name was Stiltz.)
NOTE. The name following Phillip Easaman is for a Timothy Reily, age 24, born in Ohio, a brick and stone mason. His wife is Elisabeth, age 24, born in Indiana, and a Jacob Beard, age 61,born in Maryland, resides with them. Timothy Reily could be a relative of Alice.

Hello Mr. Ron Snowden
I am just starting out with my family tree, and I know very little about the Riley family, I asked my mother and she knew very little past her grandparents, Her great grandparents William A. Riley and Charlotte (Gottschall) Riley had allready pasted away before she was born, And she bearly remembers and aunt Kate,
I never really knew my grandfarther William Roy Stackhouse, he pasted away when I was 8 or 9, and had only stayed with him maybe once. All I remember from him is he said the family came from England.
I am sorry that I couldn't help you, but I do thank you for what you have done,
Thank you again,
Nancy Stotler-Stevens

- Source: History of Cass County, Indiana; by J Powell, printed in 1913. "Classed amount the prominent and enterprising farmers of Washington township is found William Riley, another of the men whose success in life has been gained through the medium of their own efforts. From boyhood, when he was left an orphan, Mr . Riley's life has been one of incessant industry, and in the face of discouragement and misfortune, he has slowly but surely worked his way up the ladder of success, and his efforts have been rewarded by the accumulation of a fine farm of eighty-five acres, lying on the Riley road, about seven miles from Logansport. Mr. Riley was born June 15, 1851, in the city of Cleveland, Ohio, and is a son of Andrew and Catherine (Hoover) Riley. His father, a marble cutter by trade, came to Indiana when a young man and took up land in Cass county, but subsequently entered the railroad contracting business, and in that line was engaged at the time of his death. At that time William Riley was but seven years of age, and during the next three years he lived with an elder brother. The latter, however, enlisted in the Union army at the outbreak of the Civil Was , and the youth was left alone in the world. After drifting around for some time, seeking a home, he was taken in charge by his uncle**, on whose farm he was reared, and who gave hi m the advantages of a country school education. Mr. Riley continued to reside with his uncle until he was twenty-seven years of age, in the meantime carefully saving his earnings, with the end ever in view of one day being a property owner himself. His ambition was realized , in 1878, when he became the owner of his present property, a tract of eighty-five acres of fine land, which he has brought to a high state of cultivation. From time to time his finances permitted and circumstances demanded, Mr. Riley added to the buildings and improvement s on his land, thus adding to the value of a property that in itself was of much worth. He has devoted himself to general farming, and has also been successful in the raising of livestock. This land was all cleared by Mr. Riley from its virgin state, and its present condition reflects great credit upon his industry, enterprise and good management. The multitudinous duties of his work have personal preferment, but he has observed the duties of good citizenship, and has given of his time and means in supporting movements for the public welfare."
"On October 8, 1862, Mr. Riley was united in marriage with Miss Charlotte Gotschall, and to this union there have been born three children, as follows: Maud, who married Fred Stackhouse, a Cass county farmer, and has one child,---Ray: Harvey, who is single and lives on the home farm, which he is assisting his father to cultivate; and Katie, who also lives with h er parents. The family belongs to the United Brethren Church, in which all of its members have numerous friends. The life of Mr. Riley is worthy of emulation by aspiring youths and teachers of lesson that integrity and industry are bound to bring success."
**Note: The “uncle” referenced above appears to have been Isaac Hoover, with young William being shown in the 1870 Washington Township, Cass County, Indiana census. William is listed as 17 years of age, being approximately correct. At the time of the 1880 census, both William and Alice (Son of Henry Riley--William's brother) were living with Isaac.
Source: 1874 Logansport Directory lists William Riley employed as a bartender, His residence is listed as 17 Dolans Block. Unsure if this is the same William Riley.
