Civil War Pension Index to Pension Files, 1861 - 1934
Name of veteran: Joseph Fries; Joseph Kale
State filed: Illinois and Indiana
Widow: Anna Fries
Inalild pension record dated 18 Feb 1890
INCONCLUSIVE, but use of the surname KALE places considerable emphasis on this record.
===
Ann Fails, as listed in the 1910 Federal Census, did not read nor write. Joseph did. This may explain some of the inconsistencies shown in various census returns. If Ann did not read nor write, she would not have had understanding of things like the calendar, whether he spoke German or French, and so forth.

Notes |
- A marriage occurs in Allen County, Indiana on 5 May 1866 between Joseph Fris and Anne Smith. See Index to Marriage Record, 1824 - 1920 inclusive; available in the county clerk's office. Book 6, page 326. This is the correct timeframe, and Allen County was nearby Columbia City--where the Fries lived. With a wife named Ann--there is a distinct possibility these persons are our people. Leo Fries could have been in error to mention Keiner, Missouri.
